Chronic constipation is the top gastrointestinal complaint in the United States. Studies suggest that constipation may indirectly cause estrogen to be reabsorbed. With slow transit times, a low-fiber diet and low concentrations of bacteria, there will be resorption of estrogen. Elevated estrogen can give rise to many female problems, including breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. The cause of diverticular disease is not known with certainty, but it is believed that lack of dietary fiber may play a key role...for it is practically non-existent in groups of people who eat high-fiber diets.
